Freedom by the Numbers: Why Economic Freedom is the Engine of the American Dream

Economic freedom is the fundamental right of every person to control their own labor and property. In a free society, you are capable of working, producing, consuming, and investing in any way you please—and that freedom is both protected and unconstrained by the state.

The Three Pillars of Economic Freedom

  1. Freedom to Compete: Competition leads to better products and lower prices for your family. When businesses have to earn your trust, families win.

  2. Right to Your Own Earnings: You should be the primary benefactor of your hard work. When your hard-earned money stays in your pocket, it circulates through our local shops and neighbors.

  3. Personal Choice in Services: Economic freedom means having the power to choose your healthcare, your energy provider, and your lifestyle.

The Freedom Dividend

Global data from the Economic Freedom of the World report (https://www.fraserinstitute.org/studies/economic-freedom-world-2025-annual-report) reveals the staggering "Freedom Dividend" enjoyed by citizens in free societies:

  • 6.2x Higher Incomes: Citizens in the freest countries earn, on average, over six times as much as those in the least free.

  • 17 Years of Extra Life: People in the freest quartile live an average of 17 years longer than those in the least-free quartile.

  • Work-Life Balance: Ironically, those in the least-free areas actually work 20% more than those in free societies, yet struggle more to make ends meet.

  • Personal Liberty: Economic freedom is the bedrock of all liberty; it is positively correlated with high levels of personal and civil freedoms.

  • Life Satisfaction: It’s official—people in economically free societies report being significantly more satisfied with their lives.

Why It Matters Locally

When we talk about "Economic Freedom" in our state, we’re talking about ensuring South Carolina remains a place where good ideas and a work ethic can thrive for the local business owner. We’re considering the families of the Palmetto State that deserve to see the full value of their labor. And, we’re protecting our children’s future by making sure the next generation doesn't inherit a system of "closed doors" caused by over-regulation and government overreach.

Bottom Line: Economic freedom doesn't guarantee success, but it guarantees the opportunity to pursue it.
